Based on the series of 12 novels by Winston Graham, Poldark stars Aidan Turner in the title role. A truly delightful (and very PG) watch that everyone can enjoy. Wolf Hall’s primary strength, however, lies in depicting the fascinating machinations of 16th century politics, the importance of religious freedom and reform, and how a few choice whispers can so drastically influence the progression of history. But Sanditon, a book with no ending, was given life as a PBS miniseries. After all, it is hard to imagine the virginal Austen writing explicit sex scenes that pepper this new work. As the seasons progressed, many more tragedies would befall the Crawley family, making for some of most compelling television in recent memory, and all capped off with one of TV’s most satisfying finales (and then, another hugely satisfying movie). It sounds very posh, but in fact Louisa Durrell (the exceptionally charming Keeley Hawes) moved her four children from England after the death of her husband because they were struggling financially. It’s a mesmerizing viewing experience, with a perfectly gothic Victorian aesthetic that creaks with sly humor. As the heroic Poldark, he vows to sets things to right even as the odds seem insurmountable. Though this round at 165 Eaton Place is positively bursting with soapy drama—scandals, intra-family affairs, and even a Nazi spy in the household—most of the characters are fairly unsympathetic and difficult to like.
